Hovering the mouse cursor over a left-side button will show a pop-up label listing any sections of the associated page. (Pages with no
sections will not have a pop-up label.) This is to supplement the site layout (below) and can be accessed from any page. Unfortunately,
Netscape has a limit to the length of label text and some of my labels exceed this limit.
-
The left-side buttons are intended to be completely visible without the use of scrollbars. (These buttons will not be visible at all if
your browser does not support frames, or if you have reached this page directly.) Said scrollbars will disappear if the browser
window is resized to be tall enough. If you are unable to make the browser window tall enough, see the suggestions for increasing
viewing area below.
-
Because of the technical nature of this website and the amount of information contained, best viewing is with the maximum viewing area
possible. Here are some suggestions:
-
Use the green buttons underneath the left-side blue buttons (may need to scroll to see them) to hide the top banner and/or the bottom
pop-up facilities window. Hiding these will increase the vertical viewing area of the main window (the window in which you are reading
this) and the window containing the left-side buttons.
-
Choose an appropriate font size/zoom both for correct display of buttons/tabs and for the amount of information viewable without
scrolling. Covered in more detail below on a per browser basis.
-
Increase Horizontal viewing area can by terminating any left-side explorer bars, a.k.a. panels or sidebars (eg. history, favorites,
search, etc.). Covered in more detail below on a per browser basis.
-
Turn off unused toolbars and/or amalgamate and/or minimize toolbars if possible. Covered in more detail below on a per browser basis.
-
Internet Explorer viewing area notes:
-
If legible, use a text size of medium or smaller. Set using View->Text Size->...
-
Turn off explorer bars using View->Explorer Bar->...
-
Turn off toolbars using View->Toolbars->... Turn off the status bar using View->Status Bar
-
Amalgamate toolbars as follows:
-
Unlock the toolbars if they are locked (uncheck View->Toolbars->Lock The Toolbar, if checked).
-
Position the cursor at the bottom of the bottom-most toolbar until the resize cursor appears. Click the mouse and drag upwards
reducing the number of toolbar rows.
-
If desired, adjust the amount of horizontal space each toolbar takes up a row by positioning the cursor over the vertical bars
delineating the various toolbars until the resize cursor appears, click and drag as needed.
-
If desired, lock the toolbar (check View->Toolbars->Lock The Toolbar)
-
Netscape viewing area notes:
-
If legible, use a text size of "Original" (100% zoom) or smaller.
-
Turn off the sidebar using View->Show/Hide->My Sidebar
-
Turn off toolbars and the status bar using View->Show/Hide->...
-
Toolbars can be minimized by clicking on the up arrow to the left of the toolbar. The minimization will take the form of a
horizontal arrow, which when clicked, will show the toolbar again.
-
Opera viewing area notes:
-
Use only 100% zoom, as zoom affects images as well, severely distoring them.
-
Turn off panels using View->Panels->Panel Placement->Off
-
Turn off toolbars and status bar using View->Toolbars->... The free version of Opera has an advertizing bar, which disappears upon
payment and registration.
-
Tested browsers:
-
Internet Explorer 6.0.2 on Windows
-
Netscape 7.1 on Windows and Linux
-
Opera 7.5.1 on Windows and Linux
-
Notes by Operating System:
-
Microsoft Windows:
-
Internet Explorer: Displays well. Page loading is quick, except for popups, which can take 15 or more seconds to appear.
-
Netscape: Displays well except a has few more quirks than IE. Page loading is quick including popups.
-
Opera: Displays well, about as quirky as Netscape. Sometimes has difficulty connecting to the web server necessitating page reloads
to display properly. Popups are quick when they work.
-
Linux:
-
Tested OS was Red Hat 7.3. All browsers seemed to display with a very small font when compared to the same setting when using the
same browser in MS Windows. This isn't a problem for Netscape (just increase the zoom), but is for Opera because it distorts
the images.
-
Netscape: Displays well. Page loading is quick including popups. Recommended.
-
Opera: Has a great deal of difficulty connecting to the web server, necessitating numerous reload attempts to get any particular
page. It is possible that this is due to the use of Red Hat 7.3, and that newer versions of Linux perform better with Opera.
