Future Plans

  • Finish this website!
  • Cane selection. I currently use cane bought from European Double Reed in 1994. In the near future I plan on buying cane from a number of sources, posting the qualities of the various canes on this website, and giving you the option of specifying which cane to use when ordering standard or custom finished reeds or blanks.
  • Development of reed models for the German contrabassoon, the French bassoon and the baroque bassoon.
  • Online customer service. I plan to deploy customer registration, account status inquiry and online ordering. For those who prefer to keep things as they are, the current system will also remain in place.
  • Rewrite, and release to the public domain, the reed design software. My current reed design software was written about 10 years ago for 16-bit MS Windows 3.1. It is clunky, arcane and crashes frequently. I plan to rewrite this software to be compatible with modern operating systems, including all current MS OS's (98/Me/2000/XP), MAC OS, Linux and Solaris. This software will be released into the public domain for free use by all interested parties. In conjunction with this, I will make my reed model database accessible over the internet. Users of the software will be able to design their own custom reed models, and also inspect, in depth, the details of all existing public reed models.
  • Inside profiling. An idea I've had for many years, but have been unable to follow up on without new reed design software, is to have a percentage of the profile cut into the gouge side of the blade. The effect will be similar to the existing tapered gouge configuration, but my belief is that the inside profiling will give better results.
  • New reedmaking machinery. In the distant future, I am hoping to have new machinery built that is more production oriented, but retains the programmability of my current machine. My existing machine has at least lived up to my expectations in terms of its ability to accurately produce the reed models that I design. However, production is limited to about 30 pieces of cane a day. One side effect is that I am unable to sell cane, as I need the profit from making the cane into reeds just to keep the business alive. New machinery, whose conceptual design I cogitate on frequently, would be able to satisfy any possible future demand for cane as well as reeds.
